Frequently Asked Questions
How do I book?
Get in touch via the Contact page with details of the activity you are looking for, answering the questions on that page. Once confirmed we’ll send you a link for online payment – see the Terms and Conditions page for when payment is due. Before the day we’ll provide full details, kit list, itinerary, and meeting location, and you are welcome to ask any further questions.
What happens if I need to cancel?
See the cancellation policy on the Terms and Conditions page.
How do I disclose medical information?
Let us know when booking, particularly for any conditions that may affect how the day is planned.
Where do activities take place?
- Indoor climbing – at one of the local walls at Kendal (preferred), Lancaster (bouldering only), or Keswick.
- Outdoor climbing – mostly in Langdale or Borrowdale, but there are plenty of venues to choose from, and we’ll pick something appropriate for your level of experience. It is usually around a 10-20 minute walk (often uphill!) from parking to the crag, but some venues involve longer walk-ins. Rock climbing venues may be varied depending on the weather forecast (for example to shelter from strong winds).
- Hill walking – typically take place in the Lake District or the Howgills. We will pick something to meet your objectives, whether they are climbing a specific mountain, just getting off the beaten track, or finding some challenging terrain for navigation practice.
In all cases, let us know where you are staying and any specific objectives you have in mind when booking
Where do we meet for activities?
Parking in the Lake District can be tricky, particularly in the height of summer! We will confirm a suitable location to meet once the destination is finalised. Sometimes we will meet at one location and consolidate transport if parking is limited at the final destination.
Can under 18s participate in activities?
Under 18s can be part of a group activity so long as they are accompanied by a parent or guardian. Under 18s count as standard group members (i.e. same as adults) when it comes to pricing your activity.
What kit do I need for walking activities?
- Sturdy footwear (we recommend ankle length walking boots)
- Waterproof jacket with hood
- Waterproof trousers
- Hat and gloves
- Food and snacks for the day
- Drink (at least 1 litre)
- Spare warm clothing layers
- Rucksack (25-30L)
- Walking poles (if you use them)
- Personal medication (if required)
- Camera (optional)
If we are specifically practicing navigation, or you are interested in learning about it, then bring a map and compass if you have one, otherwise we can supply.
Unfortunately we are unable to lend footwear and waterproofs. But if you are struggling to get the required kit, or have any questions, let us know and we’ll see what we can advise.
What kit do I need for rock climbing activites?
As for walking (above) but bring a slightly larger rucksack (30-40L) to help carry some of the climbing equipment.
If you have rock climbing shoes, harness, helmet, belay device etc. then bring them. Let us know when booking if you need to borrow a harness and helmet. Unfortunately we are unable to lend rock climbing shoes, but you can do introductory rock climbing in sturdy walking shoes or trainers.
We will provide all technical climbing equipment, e.g. ropes, climbing protection.
How much prior experience do I need?
None! Let us know your experience and aspirations when booking, and we will tailor your activity accordingly.
Am I fit and/or strong enough?
Yes! Of course hill walking and rock climbing are both physical activities, but again let us know your experience and fitness level, and we will tailor your activity accordingly. Walking speed will be comfortable for all participants in the group. For rock climbing you will not be hanging off your arms – good technique comes from the legs and footwork (which we will teach you!).
What happens if it is raining or other bad weather?
Bad weather is not uncommon in the Lake District! Walking can go ahead in most conditions, and if necessary we will adjust plans to keep everyone safe while still providing a rewarding experience. Occasionally we may need to cancel if there are extreme and/or wintry conditions, or if it is too wet for rock climbing, in which case we will attempt to reschedule with you – see our Terms and Conditions page.
Are the activities free of risk?
Whilst we will do everything in our power to ensure your safety, the dynamic nature of the outdoor environment means we can never ensure your safety in every situation. You are responsible for accepting the risks of injury or death and we ask that you read the British Mountaineering Council’s participation statement below.
Climbing and mountaineering are activities with a danger of personal injury or death. Participants in these activities should be aware of and accept these risks and be responsible for their own actions. See: https://www.thebmc.co.uk/risk-and-safety
