Hill Skills
Have you made a resolution to get out in the hills a little more but are not sure where to start? Why not join one of our hill skills days!
Our hill skills days are designed to give you the confidence to venture out safely and get the most from a day in the hills. Maybe you are just taking your first steps away from the tourist hotspots; or you have done some hill walking with friends and are keen to pick up tips for staying safe before you go solo; or maybe you have had an epic day out and want to avoid another one – this is the course for you!
What you will learn
On the hill skills days we will cover:
- Planning – how to successfully plan a day in the hills
- Movement skills – how to move efficiently over uneven terrain
- Clothing and equipment – sensible choices can make the difference between a great day out and a miserable day out!
- Weather – how weather affects your day on the hills, and how to interpret a range of different weather forecasts
- Navigation – basic introduction to navigation (to learn more about navigation, check out our Navigation Days)
- Environmental knowledge – learn about local flora, fauna and geology, as well as how to minimise your impact on the hill
- Hazards and emergency procedures in the hills – how to respond to any hazards you encounter and what to do in an emergency
The focus will be on developing your hills skills rather than covering huge distances. Speed and distance will be tailored to the group.
Location
The days will be based in the Lake District – exact location to be determined based on the weather and where participants are coming from.
